The Amy Gillett Foundation is a charity with one purpose – reducing the incidence of death and injury of bike riders. The Foundation was born out of tragedy, the death of Amy Gillett, who was killed by an out of control motorist whilst cycling with her National Team mates in Germany.
David McDonald, our Market Development Manager participated in a 120 KM ride on completely closed roads to raise funds for this foundation and create change to give cyclists 1 metre of space when passing in a vehicle. Impact Steel is proud of David’s community work and thanks all our employees and customers who supported David.

Cornerstone support the homeless community in the local Dandenong area, serving meals three times a week and providing other services such as counselling and short term shelter. Impact Steel first supported Cornerstone by helping source and fit some material for their kitchens.
Impact Steel recently donated backpack beds to Cornerstone as a special Christmas gift from their key customers. It was a win-win for all involved, Cornerstone, Impact Steel and their Customers.
“This is such a great community initiative that is growing from strength to strength. Our key customers along with Impact Steel are getting involved in supporting our local community and real people in desperate need. Together we aim to make a difference!” says Chris Cox, Sales Manager of Impact Steel.
Impact Steel is excited to continue this support, along with their key customers. Some would say supporting the local community is their “cornerstone”. If you’d like to learn more about this great initiative, call the team at Impact Steel.

For more than 12 years, FormBoss™ has manufactured high quality steel garden edging and associated products for the Australian market. With a team of passionate and experienced staff and a well-equipped manufacturing facility in Victoria’s Bayswater, the company specializes in designing and manufacturing specifically for Australian conditions and local market requirements.
General manager, Peter Boerlage says the key to the FormBoss™ ongoing success is “our commitment to quality and innovation to allow our customers to be creative with their landscaping and garden bed designs.”
“In terms of local manufacturers, there are very few companies that do what we do. We provide high quality steel garden edging products specifically for Australian conditions. While we do face competition from alternative products, we have created a niche for ourselves by manufacturing tailored products” says Peter.
“Our customers include garden centers, local resellers and suppliers of gardening products, landscapers, home-owners and the DIY gardeners. Many of our customers require creative solutions to fit a particular design brief.”
“We work with a lot of project managers that have specific requirements. It might be a feature garden bed for the Rod Laver Arena at the Tennis Centre to a special landscaping feature at the Crown Casino.”
No matter what the requirement, Peter says FormBoss™ can design and manufacture the product.
“On top of that, as a local manufacturer and supplier we can offer a level of product service and installation support unmatched by our competitors” claims Toby Lestrell, sales manager of FormBoss™.
“We couldn’t turn our products around so quickly without a reliable steel supplier like Impact Steel” says Toby. “The key to our success has hinged on FormBoss™ relying on the product sourcing and product development Impact Steel has brought our business. We now work with different materials, such as the Cold Rolled CW300-G David introduced us to recently.”
David McDonald from the Impact Steel team adds, “Being part of the wider BlueScope group of companies and having direct access to local and overseas manufacturers has allowed us to recommend fit for purpose products and services. We work hard with FormBoss™ to constantly improve and innovate with their business. This allows Impact Steel to grow alongside our customers.”
“The key to our strong relationship has been quick turnaround. We may order our materials as late as 2pm and receive them as early at 7:30am the next morning. This flexibility and quick response allows FormBoss™ to serve our customers without fail” states Toby.

“This Just In Time approach to our manufacturing keeps us competitive and the first choice in the market when it comes to quality and creative garden solutions.”
“We are now looking into streamlining our operations and moving under one roof. We have had great support from David and the team at Impact Steel and look forward to our strong ongoing relationship.”
David adds, “Our recent Steel Efficiency Review® will provide the support and technical expertise to help FormBoss™ with the placement of stock and machinery with the planned re-location. We found that 5S could possibly help with operational procedures and a process for standardization for the new factory. In addition, a transition to consignment stock was also uncovered to be beneficial for FormBoss™.
Providing sustainable and cost effective edging products that move away from wooden, concrete and plastic options is just the beginning to what FormBoss™ can do.

On the 7th of October 2016, Jim Paxton who is part of our transport team received the National Medal for Service Award after 20 years of service volunteering for the SES, CFA and the Army Reserve. We are very proud of Jim and his work towards our local communities.
The National Medal is an Australian award given for long service by operational members of specified eligible organisations. To qualify a person must have served an eligible organisation for at least 15 years in the primary function, and the chief officer of the organisation must assess their service as “diligent”.
The National Medal recognises those who put themselves at risk in the service of the community, or in the course of enforcing the law to protect persons and property. The regulations governing the award use the term “primary function” to describe this concept.
Jim has sacrificed time and energy from his personal life over the last 20 years and fully deserves this acknowledgement from our local communities. Well done Jim from the Impact Steel team – we are very proud of you and what you stand for.

Iconic Products, Clever Strategy behind local manufacturing success story.
Shamic Sheetmetal is an Australian-owned company that was founded in 1978. Specialised sheet metal manufacturers, Shamic Sheetmetal is best known for its very own brand of wood and gas heater – the Coonara.
“The Coonara is a really iconic Australian product,” explains general manager, Luke Crosthwaite. “We do manufacture other heaters but the Coonara is certainly the most popular and most well known. As a company we certainly value that strong brand awareness for our flagship product.”
Shamic Sheet Metal sells its heater range through a network of more than 200 dealers located around the country.
“We tend to make more sales in the cooler parts of Australia such as Victoria, NSW and Tasmania. Our focus at the moment is on producing a new heater that’s been specially designed for warmer climates where people still want a beautiful looking heater but don’t need the intensity of heat that the Coonara is known for.”
Aside from heaters, Shamic Sheet Metal’s other work involves contract manufacturing based around sheet metal.
“We do laser cutting, folding, welding and powder coating for a wide range of customers. Bringing as many processes as possible in-house gives us the flexibility to respond quickly to ever changing production demands. In particular we manufacture a lot of automotive aftermarket products, touch screen kiosk products, lighting products and train components.”
Luke says a commitment to automation has enabled Shamic Sheet Metal to achieve longevity in an extremely competitive manufacturing environment.
“Most other heater manufacturers import from China. To stay competitive here in Australia we’ve invested in automation over the life of the company, making us very efficient. We are what’s known as a ‘lights out’ operation where our machinery keeps working day and night.”
“At this level of automation, the sheet stock products you put into the machines have to be spot on, and that’s where Impact Steel comes in because they consistently provide high quality products that are nice and flat for our machines’ automatic sheet loaders. One dodgy sheet can lose us a whole night’s production, and we just can’t risk that.”
“We use Impact Steel products such as hot rolled black steel, which we use to make our fireboxes, and aluminised aluminium coated steel for our gas heaters. We need the best quality steel that’s very resilient to heat and meets stringent quality standards. We know we will always get that from Impact Steel.”
Luke appreciates Impact Steel’s commitment to the business. “We find the service from Impact Steel fantastic. They really understand our business – we’ve worked together for a long time.”

Our Aluminium range steels itself for growth.
We differentiate ourselves by working hard to understand our customers’ true requirements and then sourcing the right aluminum product that meets those exact needs.
To meet their customers’ requirements, Impact Steel sources aluminium both locally and from global suppliers, which have been through a rigorous Quality Assurance process as these products are no longer manufactured in Australia.
Impact Steel supplies aluminium product to an almost infinite range of applications however the key market sectors are marine, automotive and transport, engineering, building and architectural applications.
In the marine sector Impact Steel supply a range of manufacturers from small boat trailers through to the largest locally constructed commercial vessels.
A key end-use for aluminium in the transport area is in heavy duty truck trailers where aluminium’s combination of high strength, formability and relative low weight make it the ideal choice.
Aluminium is also finding a growing place in architectural and building applications. Again its inherent formability, strength-for-weight nature and non-corrosive nature make it the ideal choice for many critical external applications.
While in many applications aluminium has some natural product advantages, the Impact Steel team offer their customers much more than just being a reliable supplier of good quality product.
We can also undertake processing to support with all customer requirements. For further information on Impact Steel’s aluminium offer and its range of products and services, contact Impact Steel on (03) 9293 5177.
